HOW IT WORKS
App Overview
This app helps you track and analyze rugby union matches by recording every possession during a game. After the match, you can view detailed statistics and season-long analysis to improve team performance.
Recording a Match
1. Create Match: Enter team names, competition, and date
2. Select Sides: Choose which side of the field each team starts on
3. Record Each Possession:
Select which team has possession
Pick the zone where possession starts
Choose the origin (how possession was gained)
Track rucks and kicks during the possession
Record any points scored (3, 5, or 7)
4. Half Time: Sides automatically swap for the second half
5. Finish: Complete the match to save all data
Understanding Zones
Zone 1: Your 22-meter area (defensive zone)
Zone 2: Your midfield (between your 22 and halfway line)
Zone 3: Opponent midfield (between halfway and their 22)
Zone 4: Opponent 22-meter area (attacking zone)
Attack Origins
Origins describe how a possession begins:
Lineout: From a lineout
Scrum: From a scrum
Restart: Kick-off or restart (22m drop-out, goal-line drop-out)
Carry over: Retained from previous possession
Turnover: Won the ball from opponent
Penalty: Awarded a penalty
Ruck steal: Stole ball at a ruck
Free kick: Awarded a free kick
Key Statistics Explained
Performance Rating: Overall effectiveness combining scoring, territory gain, and possession security
Score %: Percentage of possessions that result in points
Security %: Percentage of possessions retained (not lost to turnover/penalty/ruck steal)
Risk %: Percentage of attacks starting from errors (penalty, turnover, ruck steal)
Success Rate: Percentage of set-piece attacks that score, retain possession, or gain territory
Season Analysis Cards
Analyze performance across multiple matches with these cards:
Kicking: Kicking frequency, effectiveness, and patterns
Risk: Error analysis and when risk events occur (by ruck count)
Set Pieces: Restarts, scrums, and lineouts performance with success rates, risk %, scrum penalties won, and maul tries
Performance Summary: Comparative performance across all 7 attack platforms
Set Piece Statistics
Success %: Percentage of set pieces where team scores, retains possession, plays rucks, or kicks
Risk %: Percentage of set pieces immediately followed by opponent attacking from penalty/turnover/ruck steal
Scrum Penalties Won: Penalties won directly from scrums (0 rucks played, next attack from penalty)
Maul Tries: Tries scored from lineouts without playing any rucks (5+ points, 0 rucks)
Dashboard Analysis (Desktop Only)
The Dashboard provides a comprehensive statistical overview of your team's performance across different play categories. View running averages and trends to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Play Categories:
Zones 1-4: Performance broken down by field position where attacks start
Special Filters: No kicks, Excl. Penalties, 0 Rucks, 1-3 Rucks, Beyond 3 rucks
Dashboard Columns:
Times per game: How often this platform occurs per match
Points per game: Average points scored from this platform per match
Move forward %: Percentage of possessions that advance territory
Score %: Percentage of possessions that result in points
Risk %: Percentage ending in high-risk errors (penalty/turnover/ruck steal)
Avg. Rucks per play: Average number of rucks per possession
Kick %: Percentage of possessions that include kicks
Performance: Overall rating combining scoring, retention, and territory
Tracker Graphs (Desktop Only)
Track your team's performance trends across the season with 6 key metrics displayed as running averages. The W/L indicators below each graph align with data points to show match outcomes.
Forward Movement %: Territorial gain success rate over time
Rucks Per Attack: Average ruck count per possession trend
Kick %: Kicking frequency trend across matches
Golden Territory %: Percentage of quality attacking possessions (set pieces in opponent's half)
💡 Note: All graphs display running averages, not per-game values. This smooths out volatility and shows true season-long trends.
Outcomes Analysis (Desktop Only)
Predict what happens next based on historical data. Select a specific play scenario to see the most likely outcomes for the next play and the play after that.
How to Use:
Select Opponent: Choose a specific opponent or view all opponents combined
Choose Field Zone: Pick which zone the play starts in (Zone 1-4)
Select Play Origin: Choose how possession was gained (Scrum, Lineout, etc.)
View Results: See top 5 most likely next plays and plays after
Understanding the Three Columns:
THIS PLAY: Your filters and sample size. Shows your scoring % from this platform
NEXT PLAY: Top 5 most likely immediate outcomes with probabilities
PLAY AFTER: Top 5 most likely outcomes two plays later
